Davao City Tricycle Drivers Receive ₱5,000 Fuel Subsidy Amid Rising Costs

On Wednesday morning, April 8, 2026, a total of 437 tricycle drivers in Davao City received a ₱5,000 fuel subsidy from the Department of Social Welfare and Development–Davao Region (DSWD-Davao). The payout took place at Agdao Public Market, providing much-needed financial relief to transport workers grappling with escalating fuel prices.

Distribution Process and Eligibility Criteria

The subsidy distribution was coordinated between DSWD-Davao and the city government, targeting qualified beneficiaries to support their daily livelihoods. Rhuelo Aradanas, DSWD-Davao regional director, emphasized that only drivers on the official masterlist were eligible for this initial payout. He advised recipients to complete all necessary requirements for future releases and clarified that further coordination with the city government is no longer required.

Despite the successful distribution, some drivers experienced confusion prior to the event. Several individuals reported not finding their names on the masterlist, even after submitting documents and receiving text notifications. Felipe Rivera, a 48-year-old driver, expressed frustration, stating that government employees instructed him to check with the CTTMO for his name, despite having already submitted his paperwork. "It's really confusing," he remarked.

Beneficiary Reactions and Calls for Fair Fares

Among the grateful recipients was Noelle Arellano, 69, who thanked both God and the government for the assistance. "I thank God for making a way through the DSWD and our government to give us even a small additional support for my needs," he said. Another beneficiary, Edgardo Gonzaga, 65, highlighted the ongoing challenges by calling for fare increases to match rising fuel costs. "We are really appealing for a fair fare increase so drivers can earn properly again," he explained, noting that stagnant fares combined with fuel prices nearing ₱90 make it difficult to afford food for their families.

Login Lopez, 43, urged fellow drivers to secure proper franchise documents to ensure eligibility for future government aid programs. This advice underscores the importance of documentation in accessing ongoing support.

Government Program and Economic Context

The fuel subsidy is part of a broader government initiative designed to cushion transport workers from the impact of increasing fuel prices and ongoing economic pressures. By providing direct cash assistance, the program aims to alleviate daily expenses and sustain livelihoods in the transport sector. The smooth execution of the payout, despite initial logistical hiccups, demonstrates a commitment to supporting vulnerable communities during challenging times.

As fuel costs continue to rise, such subsidies play a crucial role in helping tricycle drivers maintain their operations and support their families. The event in Davao City serves as a model for targeted assistance, though it also highlights the need for clearer communication and streamlined processes to prevent future confusion among beneficiaries.
