Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano has invited National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag to attend the Senate Blue Ribbon subcommittee hearing concerning the multi-billion peso flood control scandal. The move comes after reports that the NBI received information from an individual alleging that former Congressman Mike Defensor paid 18 former soldiers 5 million pesos each to testify about anomalies in the flood control projects.
According to Cayetano, if this information is verified by the NBI Director, there would be sufficient basis to believe the allegations. Hence, he invited Matibag to personally confront Defensor and the 18 ex-marines during the hearing. Cayetano added that he wants to determine whether the former soldiers are lying.
The Senate Blue Ribbon subcommittee is investigating the massive flood control scandal, which involves billions of pesos in public funds. The invitation to NBI Director Matibag aims to shed light on the alleged bribery and ensure the integrity of the investigation.
