Comelec Accelerates Investigation into Senator Marcoleta's 2025 Election Spending

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, that it will expedite its probe into the Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (Soce) filed by Senator Rodante Marcoleta following the May 2025 midterm elections. This decision comes amid growing public interest and scrutiny over the senator's financial declarations during the campaign period.

Hastening Deliberations on PFAD Recommendations

In a recent interview, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia revealed that the commission is speeding up deliberations on the recommendations submitted by the Political Finance and Affairs Department (PFAD). The PFAD conducted an investigation into alleged misdeclarations in Senator Marcoleta's Soce, which has been under review for an extended period.

"We have to immediately come up with a disposition because we know the public interest involved in this issue," Garcia emphasized. He further added, "It is necessary because the case has been pending for too long. The Commission needs to reach a disposition." This statement underscores Comelec's commitment to addressing the matter promptly and transparently.

Discrepancies in Marcoleta's Financial Reports

Senator Marcoleta's Soce for the 2025 elections reported zero contributions received, while his campaign spending totaled P112.86 million. This raised significant questions, particularly when compared to his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN), which showed a net worth of P51.9 million. The disparity between his reported spending and net worth has fueled speculation and calls for accountability.

In response to these inquiries, Marcoleta explained that friends had donated funds for his 2025 campaign. He stated that he intentionally did not declare these donations to honor the donors' requests for anonymity. This explanation, however, has not fully alleviated concerns, leading Comelec to order the PFAD to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

Political Pressure and Public Scrutiny

The urgency of the probe has been highlighted by recent political pressure. On Tuesday, Senator Panfilo Lacson publicly questioned the length of time Comelec has taken to resolve the issue, adding to the mounting calls for a swift resolution. This scrutiny reflects broader concerns about transparency and accountability in political financing, especially in the aftermath of major elections.

As Comelec moves forward with its accelerated investigation, the outcome will be closely watched by the public and political observers alike. The case not only involves Senator Marcoleta's specific declarations but also touches on larger issues of campaign finance integrity and regulatory enforcement in the Philippines' electoral system.
