Malacañang has revealed that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is disappointed after efforts to bring home former Ako Bicol party-list Representative Zaldy Co fell through. Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro said she personally spoke with the President, who admitted being “disappointed” because Co’s repatriation was nearly completed but was halted due to ongoing foreign legal processes.
Documentation Issues Cited
According to Malacañang, the delay stemmed from the use of allegedly invalid documentation, meaning the Czech Republic retains jurisdiction over the next steps in Co’s case. The Palace clarified that it sees no reason for the President to apologize to the public, despite some citizens’ disappointment over the failed return of the former congressman. Castro emphasized that the administration took all proper steps to process the case.
No Apology Needed
The Palace also stood by the President’s earlier statements regarding Co’s arrest in Prague. The government expressed hope that broader cooperation among nations under the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) will expedite the process for Co’s possible return to the Philippines. Co faces corruption charges related to flood control projects.
Malacañang reiterated that the administration acted appropriately and remains committed to pursuing legal remedies. The delay highlights the complexities of international legal cooperation and the challenges in repatriating individuals facing charges abroad. The Palace urged the public to trust the process and allow diplomatic channels to work.
