Philippine Army Seizes Arms Cache from Communist Group in Panay Operation
In a significant security operation, troops from the 82nd Infantry (Bantay Laya) Battalion successfully recovered an arms cache believed to have been concealed by remnants of the Communist Terrorist Group Komiteng Rehiyon-Panay. The operation took place on March 14, 2026, in the remote hinterland boundaries spanning Libacao, Aklan, Iloilo, and Capiz.
Operation Details and Recovered Items
The 82nd Infantry Battalion, which is based in Banga, Aklan and commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Elmar Salvador, executed the mission following crucial intelligence provided by local residents. This collaborative effort led to the seizure of a substantial collection of weapons and ammunition, including:
- One M1 Garand rifle
- Four aluminum magazines for 5.56mm ammunition
- Three additional aluminum magazines for 5.56mm ammunition
- 141 rounds of 7.62mm ball ammunition
- 12 rounds of .30 caliber carbine ammunition
- Four rounds of caliber .30 M2 ball ammunition
- Two rounds of 40mm high-explosive ammunition
Impact on Security and Community Collaboration
Military authorities emphasized that this recovery forms a critical part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the logistical capabilities of the Communist Terrorist Group in the Panay region. The Philippine Army highlighted the invaluable cooperation from residents and former rebels, which directly contributed to the operation's success.
Officials stated that seizing this arms cache significantly weakens the remaining armed elements of the group and prevents these firearms from being used in potential future hostile activities. The Army reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining security operations and strengthening partnerships with local communities to ensure lasting peace.
Leadership Commendation and Future Initiatives
Major General Michael Samson, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, praised both the soldiers and local residents for their roles in the successful operation. "This successful operation highlights the importance of unity between our soldiers and the people," Samson said. "The seizure of this war materiel is a clear indication that the CTG's strength continues to dwindle. Rest assured, your Army remains committed to protecting communities and ensuring lasting peace in Panay."
Authorities have encouraged residents to continue reporting any suspicious activities, underscoring that collaboration between military personnel and the civilian population plays a vital role in maintaining peace and security throughout Western Visayas. This operation serves as a testament to the effectiveness of community-based intelligence in counter-insurgency efforts.
