Navy Continues Search for Missing Crew After Vessel Capsizes

Philippine Navy Intensifies Search and Rescue Efforts Following Maritime Incidents

The Philippine Navy has announced the continuation of comprehensive search and rescue (SAR) operations in two critical maritime zones, following separate vessel incidents that have left multiple individuals missing. These coordinated efforts underscore the Navy's commitment to maritime safety and the protection of Filipino seafarers in both the West Philippine Sea and southern Philippine waters.

West Philippine Sea Operation: MV Devon Bay Capsizing

In the West Philippine Sea, the Navy is focusing its SAR mission near Bajo de Masinloc, where the Singapore-flagged general cargo vessel M/V Devon Bay reportedly capsized on January 23, 2025. The incident occurred approximately 141 nautical miles west of Pangasinan, well within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. The vessel was transporting a cargo of iron ore and had 21 Filipino crew members on board at the time of the capsizing.

Initial rescue efforts, coordinated with other responding vessels, successfully saved 17 crew members. However, four Filipino seafarers remain missing, prompting the Navy to deploy the BRP Jose Rizal (FF150) to support ongoing operations. The Navy is working closely with concerned government agencies to enhance the search and ensure all possible areas are covered.

Southern Philippine Waters Operation: Motor Banca Amejara Incident

Simultaneously, the Philippine Navy is assisting in a separate SAR operation in southern Philippine waters involving the motor banca Amejara. To address this incident, Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao has deployed multiple assets, including the BRP Artemio Ricarte (PS37), BRP Tagbanua (LC296), and a Beechcraft King Air C90 aircraft (NV392). These resources are operating near the Philippine-Indonesia maritime boundary to locate any missing individuals.

As of Saturday, January 24, 2025, SAR units in this area have recovered four bodies, which have been turned over to the BRP Artemio Ricarte for proper disposition and identification. This development highlights the challenging conditions faced by rescue teams in these waters.

Commitment to Sustained Operations

The Philippine Navy has reiterated its unwavering commitment to sustained SAR operations until all missing persons are accounted for in both incidents. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance maritime security and respond swiftly to emergencies at sea. The Navy's proactive coordination with other agencies and deployment of advanced assets demonstrate its readiness to handle complex rescue scenarios.

These ongoing missions not only aim to locate the missing crew members but also serve as a reminder of the risks faced by Filipino mariners and the importance of robust naval capabilities in safeguarding the nation's waters.
