Massive Drug Bust at Surigao Port Nets P95 Million in Shabu

In a significant blow to illegal drug trafficking, law enforcement agencies conducted a successful joint operation at a major port in Surigao City, resulting in the seizure of nearly P95 million worth of shabu and the arrest of a suspected drug courier. The operation, which took place on Saturday, March 14, 2026, highlights the ongoing efforts to combat narcotics distribution through Philippine ports.

Coordinated Early Morning Raid

According to a statement from the Philippine National Police (PNP), the interdiction occurred around 4:45 a.m. at Lipata Port in Barangay Lipata. The operation was a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), PNP, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine Ports Authority Police, and other law enforcement units. This coordinated approach demonstrates the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling drug smuggling activities.

Arrest of High-Value Suspect

During the raid, operatives arrested a 23-year-old male identified by authorities through the alias “Sultan,” who is tagged as a high-value individual. The suspect, a Maranao and resident of Taguig City, allegedly acted as a drug courier. His capture is seen as a critical step in disrupting drug networks that operate across regions, potentially leading to further investigations and dismantling of larger syndicates.

Substantial Drug Haul and Evidence

The team recovered 14 packs of shabu weighing approximately 14 kilograms, with an estimated street value of P95.2 million. In addition to the drugs, police seized a gray pickup vehicle used to transport the illegal substances. This seizure not only prevents a significant amount of drugs from reaching communities but also provides valuable evidence for prosecuting those involved in the trafficking ring.

Leadership Commends Operation

PNP chief General Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended the joint operating teams for their successful operation, emphasizing the importance of coordination among law enforcement agencies in intercepting illegal drug shipments. He stated, “Malinaw ang ating mensahe—hindi natin hahayaan na magamit ang ating mga pantalan bilang daanan ng ilegal na droga.” (Our message is clear—we will not allow our ports to be used as a gateway for illegal drugs.)

General Nartatez added, “Through sustained coordination and vigilance, we will continue to intercept these shipments and hold those responsible accountable.” His remarks underscore the commitment of authorities to maintain vigilance and strengthen anti-drug measures, particularly in key transportation hubs like ports, to safeguard public health and security.
