The Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) has confirmed that the drowning deaths of two Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team players, Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili, in Dipaculao, Aurora, were not accidental.
CIDG Investigation Findings
According to CIDG Director Police Major General Robert Morico, their investigation revealed that prior to the incident, there were indications that the companions of the victims were aware of the sea conditions, including strong waves and currents. Some players were reportedly in the sea approximately 700 meters away from the resort when the incident occurred. Several companions also experienced swallowing saltwater.
Subpoenas Issued
As a result, the CIDG has issued subpoenas to 48 individuals related to the incident, including coaches and staff of the Ateneo basketball team. Former Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin has been summoned again but has not yet appeared for the investigation. The CIDG urged his cooperation with authorities.
Immigration Lookout Bulletin
Meanwhile, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued an Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order against Baldwin, former team manager Christopher “Epok” Quimpo, and other team staff. This does not imply liability but will monitor any attempt to leave the country. The DOJ is also looking into whether Ateneo de Manila University bears any responsibility.
In a statement, the university expressed solidarity with the investigation and said it will provide its explanations in accordance with proper legal processes.
