PRO-7 Honors SAF 44 in Cebu Ceremony

On January 25, 2026, the Police Regional Office (PRO)-7 solemnly commemorated the 11th anniversary of the Mamasapano operation by honoring the 44 Special Action Force members who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation. A poignant wreath-laying ceremony was held at Camp Sergio Osmeña Sr. in Cebu, led by Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan alongside other Philippine National Police officials.

Ceremony of Remembrance and Tribute

The event drew families of several Cebuano members of the SAF 44, who gathered to join in the ongoing tribute to their loved ones' heroism. Participants offered prayers and laid flowers at the Heroes Wall, creating a heartfelt atmosphere of reverence and solidarity. In his address, Maranan read a message from Acting PNP Chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., emphasizing the enduring significance of the sacrifice.

Messages of Honor and Solidarity

Nartatez's message highlighted that the National Remembrance Day is not merely about recalling events but about honoring the individuals behind them. He stated, "This day of National Remembrance is not only about remembering what happened. It is about remembering who they were, and why their sacrifice still matters. It is about honoring courage, recognizing sacrifice, and renewing our pledge not only as police officers, but as Filipinos." The message further acknowledged the SAF 44 as not just elite commandos but as sons, fathers, brothers, and friends who chose to serve the people despite the dangers of their duties.

Addressing the affected families, Nartatez expressed deep empathy, saying, "No words can truly ease your pain. Your loss is deep, and it does not disappear with time. You did not only lose police officers you lost loved ones who should have come home. On this day, we want you to know this: we remember with you, we honor them with you, and we stand with you. Their names live on in our history and in every police officer who chooses courage, restraint, and integrity in the line of duty."

Symbolic Acts and Broader Impact

Similar ceremonies were conducted by the Cebu City Police Office and the Cebu Police Provincial Office under the theme "In Valor We Remember: A Pledge for Future Generations." Police Colonel George Ylanan, chief of the CCPO, explained that lighting candles in memory of the SAF 44 symbolizes their courage, sacrifice, and selfless service to the people. He emphasized that the deaths of these 44 members have not been in vain, as they continue to inspire efforts toward peace, security, and national sovereignty.

The legacy of the SAF 44 remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel in the Philippines, fostering a sense of national unity and commitment to public service among current and future generations.
