In a significant security development, government troops have seized five high-powered firearms and additional war materiel during a targeted patrol in Maguindanao del Norte. The operation, which took place on Friday, March 20, 2026, underscores ongoing efforts to maintain peace in the region.

Lieutenant Colonel William Sabado, commander of the 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion, reported that the firearms were confiscated around 2 p.m. in Gadungan village, Talitay, Maguindanao del Norte. The security operation was initiated after the military received reports from the local community regarding armed groups causing fear among residents.
Sabado explained that this operation is part of broader measures connected to the end of the month of Ramadan, aimed at ensuring public safety during this period. "Upon arrival of the troops at the target area, the armed individuals immediately fled in different directions. The soldiers conducted a pursuit operation but were unable to catch up with them," Sabado stated in his official report.
Inventory of Seized Weapons and Equipment
The confiscated items include a diverse array of military-grade weaponry, highlighting the potential threat posed by these armed groups. According to Sabado, the seized materiel comprises:
- One 5.56-millimeter (mm) M16A1 rifle
- One 7.620mm M14 rifle
- Two 5.56mm M653 Carbines
- One 40-mm M79 Grenade Launcher
- 21 magazines
- Three 40-mm rifle grenades

Brigadier General Edgar Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, reinforced the military's dedication to safeguarding citizens. "Our soldiers are partners with the people in maintaining peace. We will not stop until the security of every citizen is ensured—not only in Talitay town but in the entire province and region of BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao)," Catu declared in a public statement.
Meanwhile, Major General Vladimir Cagara, commander of the 6th Infantry Division, characterized the weapon recovery as a critical step in preventing potential violence in Talitay, Maguindanao del Norte.
