DFA Issues Urgent Warning to Filipinos on Foreign Military Recruitment
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has issued a stark warning to Filipino citizens against joining foreign armed forces, following reports that a Filipino national was killed while fighting for Russia in the ongoing war against Ukraine. This advisory underscores the extreme dangers and potential legal repercussions associated with participation in overseas armed conflicts.
Risks and Legal Consequences Highlighted
According to the DFA, involvement in foreign military engagements exposes Filipinos to significant risks, including loss of life and serious legal ramifications. The agency emphasized that direct or indirect participation in foreign militaries may violate Philippine laws and could even lead to the revocation of citizenship. This warning comes in response to intelligence reports from Ukraine's Military Intelligence in late January, which confirmed the death of a Filipino in combat within the Donetsk region, allegedly as part of a Russian military unit.
Caution Against Deceptive Job Offers
In addition to the military warning, the DFA strongly advises the public to exercise caution regarding overseas job offers that might serve as a front for recruitment into foreign armed forces. The agency urges Filipinos seeking employment abroad to verify the authenticity of job offers, recruitment agencies, and employers through the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). Staying vigilant against illegal or deceptive recruitment practices is crucial to safeguarding personal safety and well-being.
The DFA's message is clear: Filipinos must prioritize their security and legal standing by avoiding entanglements with foreign militaries and ensuring all international employment opportunities are properly vetted.
