Maritime Expert Condemns China's Hypocrisy in Caricature Controversy

A prominent maritime expert has strongly criticized the Chinese Embassy in Manila for what he describes as a blatant double standard in its approach to a caricature issue involving Philippine officials. Professor Jay Batongbacal of the University of the Philippines issued a statement in response to the embassy's call to discipline Commodore Jay Tarriela, spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard in the West Philippine Sea.

Background of the Controversy

The dispute centers on a PowerPoint slide used by Tarriela that contained a caricature resembling Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Chinese Embassy demanded disciplinary action against Tarriela, citing the image as inappropriate. However, Batongbacal argues that this demand exposes the hypocrisy of China's so-called "Wolf Warrior" diplomacy, a term referring to its aggressive foreign policy tactics.

Evidence of Chinese Double Standards

Batongbacal pointed to several instances where Chinese diplomats and embassy accounts have engaged in similar or worse behavior. He provided three key examples to illustrate this double standard:

  • A post by the Chinese Embassy in Manila that mocked Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae.
  • A beheading threat made by Chinese Consul-General in Osaka Xue Jian against the prime minister of Japan.
  • A fabricated image shared by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian depicting an Australian soldier holding a bloodied knife near a child.

These actions, according to Batongbacal, demonstrate that Chinese officials have actively propagated caricatures and fabricated imagery against foreign leaders, making their complaint against Tarriela unjust.

Implications for Diplomatic Relations

In his statement, Batongbacal emphasized that it is unfair for China to demand sanctions against a Philippine official while its own diplomats have repeatedly used such tactics. He stressed that this inconsistency undermines the credibility of China's diplomatic stance and highlights a pattern of selective enforcement in international affairs. The issue has sparked broader discussions about the ethics of diplomatic conduct and the need for consistency in how nations address perceived slights in the global arena.
