Kalayaan Vice Mayor Appeals for National Unity Against Pro-China Influence

In an exclusive interview with Bombo Radyo, Kalayaan Vice Mayor Maurice Philip Albayda has made a heartfelt appeal to Filipinos, urging them not to be swayed by the narratives of pro-China entities or those blindly supporting certain political figures. He emphasized the critical need for a unified national stance on issues concerning the Kalayaan Island Group and the West Philippine Sea.

Strategic Importance of the West Philippine Sea

Vice Mayor Albayda highlighted that the West Philippine Sea is not just a territorial dispute but a vital resource hub for the Philippines. He stated that this area serves as the largest source of natural gas and a crucial fishing ground, making its preservation essential for the nation's economic and food security. He firmly asserted that there is no justification for surrendering the Kalayaan Island Group and the West Philippine Sea, given the significant sacrifices made by local residents to protect these territories.

Life on Pag-asa Island

Based on official data, over 400 households reside on Pag-asa Island, the only inhabited island in the Kalayaan Island Group. This community includes more than 100 students attending Pag-asa Integrated School, whom Vice Mayor Albayda described as living a simple, resilient life on the island. He expressed deep concern over the daily presence of Chinese vessels, including maritime militia and China Coast Guard ships, surrounding the island, which he said continues to disrupt the peace and stability of the area.

Call for a Cohesive National Narrative

Vice Mayor Albayda called for a cohesive and united narrative among Filipinos to counteract external influences. He stressed that unity is paramount in addressing the challenges posed by pro-China agendas, which he believes threaten Philippine sovereignty and the well-being of communities in the Kalayaan Island Group. His appeal underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and the need for steadfast national solidarity in the face of geopolitical pressures.
