De Lima: VP Sara Impeachment Hearing an 'Accountability Test' Based on Documents
Liberal Partylist Representative Leila De Lima has strongly emphasized that the ongoing impeachment hearing against Vice President Sara Duterte represents what she describes as an "accountability test" rooted firmly in documented evidence, audit findings, and a series of transactions, rather than being driven by speculation or political motives.
Focus on Confidential Fund Misuse Allegations
According to De Lima, the hearing is specifically concentrated on investigating the potential misuse of confidential funds allocated to both the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education. She clarified that this is not about a single isolated incident but involves interconnected transactions involving substantial amounts of money, with some names attached that remain unverified.
De Lima highlighted a particularly concerning example from December 2022, where hundreds of confidential activities were funded. This included the distribution of over 15 million pesos to more than 100 individuals in just one day, raising serious questions about the transparency and propriety of these expenditures.
Public Trust and Financial Accountability
Furthermore, De Lima pointed out that the allegations extend beyond mere documentation deficiencies. She stressed that this is fundamentally an issue of public trust concerning the utilization of more than 600 million pesos in public funds.
