NUP Firmly States Evidence Must Ground Impeachment Case Against VP Sara
In a strong declaration, Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno, a key member of the National Unity Party (NUP), has asserted that any impeachment proceedings targeting Vice President Sara Duterte must be firmly rooted in clear and robust evidence. Puno stressed that the House Committee on Justice must ensure all documents and proofs are thoroughly verified before forwarding the case to the Senate for trial, highlighting the need for a meticulous and transparent process.
Demand for Direct Financial Evidence in Fund Misuse Allegations
According to Puno, it is crucial to present direct financial evidence if there are allegations of misuse of confidential funds within the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education. He elaborated that proof should include records from the Anti-Money Laundering Council demonstrating that the funds were diverted to personal use or accounts of the Vice President, her relatives, or representatives. Without such concrete evidence, Puno stated that the NUP will vote to dismiss the complaint, underscoring their commitment to due process and factual accuracy.
Scrutiny of Witness Testimony and Broader Implications
Puno also called for careful examination of testimony from a witness currently incarcerated in a separate case, noting that this individual might have motives to provide false statements. Overall, the NUP has made it clear that they will only support the impeachment if there is documented, verifiable evidence of wrongdoing, reinforcing their stance on upholding legal standards and preventing politically motivated actions.
