The legal team representing Vice President Sara Duterte has launched a sharp critique against the House Committee on Justice, alleging what they describe as "double standards" in how impeachment complaints are being handled. According to spokesperson Atty. Michael Poa, the committee appears to be applying different criteria when examining cases against Vice President Duterte versus those against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Disparities in Case Treatment Highlighted
Atty. Poa pointed to specific instances to support his claims. The impeachment complaint against President Marcos was dismissed in February due to insufficient evidence regarding allegations of corruption linked to purported fake flood control projects. In contrast, complaints filed against Vice President Duterte this month—which include accusations of graft, corruption, and threats against President Marcos's life—have been deemed sufficient to proceed by the same committee.
"It is unacceptable to have varying standards when both officials hold equal positions under the law," Poa emphasized during his statement. He argued that this inconsistency undermines the integrity of the impeachment process and violates principles of fairness.
Formal Request for Dismissal Submitted
In response to these perceived inequities, Vice President Duterte's camp has formally requested the House Committee on Justice to dismiss the impeachment complaints against her. Their petition cites multiple grounds, including:
