Cebu Police Officer Faces Charges After Drunk Driving Crash Injures Couple

A police officer in Cebu City is now confronting serious legal repercussions following a drunk driving incident that left a couple injured. The crash occurred at the intersection of Junquera Street and P. del Rosario in Barangay San Antonio, Cebu City, early on Friday morning, February 27, 2026.

Details of the Incident

At approximately 5:02 a.m., a motorcycle ridden by a couple, identified as Rodielo Ofquira, 37, and Janet Candado, was struck from behind by another motorcycle operated by a police officer. According to initial investigations, the officer was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time. The couple, residents of Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City, were traveling southbound on their way to work when the collision happened.

The impact was severe enough to eject both the couple and the officer from their vehicles, causing significant injuries. As a result, the couple was unable to proceed to their duties and were immediately transported to a hospital for medical attention.

Investigation Findings

Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) officials reviewed CCTV footage, which revealed that the couple's motorcycle had already come to a stop at a red traffic signal when the officer's motorcycle, described as speeding, rear-ended them. In the aftermath, it was discovered that the officer, a patrolman assigned to the Cebu City Mobile Force Company (CMFC), did not possess a valid driver's license, only a student-driver's permit.

By Saturday, February 28, the victims had been discharged from the hospital, but the officer remained hospitalized. He required surgery for fractures in his hand and foot sustained during the crash.

Legal Consequences

The officer is now facing charges of Reckless Imprudence Resulting to Damage to Property and Physical Injuries. This case highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and accountability, particularly involving law enforcement personnel. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure all aspects of the incident are thoroughly examined.
