An ex-convict was killed after challenging his host to a fight in Barangay Balud, Dalaguete town on Thursday afternoon, June 11, 2026.
Police identified the victim as Jonard Gutib, 30, also an ex-convict with a frustrated murder case, from Amonsao, Barangay Carolohan, Dalaguete. He was known as a 'badboy' in the area.
The suspect, Ponciano Pueblo, a former inmate for murder and illegal drugs, from Barangay Balud, was arrested after a chase by police.
According to Police Major Vincent Zozobrabo, chief of Dalaguete Police Station, before the incident, Pueblo was sleeping on the lower bunk of a double-deck bed inside his house. Gutib arrived, seemingly angry, and suddenly struck the double deck, waking up the suspect. Pueblo got up and drank water, but the victim allegedly challenged him, saying: 'Pull out your bolo because I am ready!' Enraged, Pueblo struck Gutib first with the bolo.
The victim managed to run outside but was chased by Pueblo and caught along the roadside, where he was repeatedly stabbed. It was learned that Gutib had been staying at Pueblo's house for only two days. The reason for the victim's anger and challenge is still unknown.
