Senior stabbed, intestines exposed in Minglanilla attack

A 63-year-old man suffered severe injuries after his neighbor suddenly stabbed him, causing his intestines to protrude, in Barangay Guindarohan, Minglanilla, on Sunday afternoon, June 28, 2026.

Details of the Incident

The victim, Gregorio Tapic Abanto, was walking past a hut in Purok Mangga around 1:30 p.m. when the suspect, Jhonmar Villaver, an adult neighbor, allegedly attacked him without provocation. According to the Minglanilla Municipal Police Station's investigation, based on statements from four witnesses, the suspect and the witnesses were drinking inside the hut when they saw Abanto approaching.

As Abanto passed by, Villaver suddenly lunged at him and stabbed him in the right side of the abdomen with a sharp knife. The motive remains unclear, as the witnesses stated that the victim did not harass or interfere with them while they were drinking.

Immediate Aftermath and Medical Response

After the stabbing, the suspect fled the scene. Rescue personnel from Minglanilla quickly responded and brought Abanto to the Minglanilla District Hospital. Due to the depth of the wound and his critical condition, he was later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City.

Police Investigation and Charges

The Minglanilla police are conducting a manhunt operation to apprehend Villaver and recover the knife used in the crime. Authorities have prepared charges of frustrated murder against the suspect.
