Cordova Cancels Christmas Village to Aid Calamity Victims
Cordova Cancels Christmas Events for Disaster Relief

The Municipality of Cordova in Cebu has made the significant decision to cancel its yearly Inter-Barangay and Inter-School Christmas Village and Christmas Lighting Competition for 2025. This action comes as the Philippines continues to recover from a series of powerful natural disasters.

A Decision of Solidarity and Prudence

Mayor Cesar “Didoy” Suan announced that the cancellation is a direct response to the call from Malacañang and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM). The national directive urges all local government units across the country to practice moderation in their holiday festivities. The goal is to channel potential savings and resources toward assisting communities that have been severely impacted by recent earthquakes and typhoons.

Preserving Hope Amidst Austerity

Despite calling off the major competitions, the spirit of Christmas will not be entirely dimmed in Cordova. The local government is ensuring that tradition continues by installing a giant 20-foot Christmas tree at the town plaza. This tree is intended to be a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and the unwavering spirit of the Cordovanhons.

In a public statement, Mayor Suan reassured residents, "People of Cordova, even though we are in a time of consecutive calamities and even though we had to temporarily suspend the competition, we still have the upcoming Christmas Tree Lighting, which will be followed by a fireworks display." This event is scheduled to proceed, offering a moment of communal hope and celebration.

Redirecting Resources to Where They Are Needed Most

Extending the gesture of solidarity further, Mayor Suan confirmed that the municipal government will also forgo its usual extravagant Christmas party. Instead, the year will end with simple and meaningful gatherings for employees. This move reinforces the local government's commitment to standing with the families who have suffered losses due to the recent calamities. The funds that would have been spent on the competitions and a lavish party will be redirected to support disaster response and rehabilitation efforts, providing crucial aid to those most in need.
