Mandaue homeowners seek aid after demolition of 179 homes

The Sityo Marna Homeowners Association Inc. in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City, has called on the government to assist them in their current situation. The group submitted a position paper to the Mandaue City Government on Wednesday, July 8, urging officials to intervene in the ongoing demolition of their community, which they claim violated clearing operations.

Demolition Affected 179 Families

The document was filed several weeks after the demolition in Sityo Marna, which, according to the homeowners association, affected 179 homes. In their position paper, the group questioned the legality of the demolition and pointed to alleged violations of the Urban Development and Housing Act of 1992 (Republic Act No. 7279).

Among their recommendations were the reconstruction of demolished houses, a legal review of the demolition, the establishment of clear legal protocols for future demolitions, and continued legal and administrative support from the Mandaue City Government and Barangay Subangdaku.

Residents Seek Temporary Shelter and Aid

The group also hopes that displaced families will receive temporary shelter, food assistance, construction materials, and other humanitarian aid. Marvin Ellaraiz, one of the affected residents, said many families remain without permanent shelter since the demolition.

“We are just asking for help so we can have a place to stay and get proper sleeping quarters. It is very difficult because we have students,” Ellaraiz said.

He also claimed that the demolition team used heavy equipment without presenting a writ of demolition and that no sheriff was present during the operation. Jun Abellanosa, another resident, said many displaced families are temporarily living along the roadside while waiting for assistance.
