Angeles City Clarifies Septage Fee Collection Amid Ordinance Review
Angeles City Mayor Carmelo "Jon" Lazatin II has issued a clear statement to address confusion among residents regarding the collection of environmental or septage fees. The mayor emphasized that city hall is not directly involved in collecting these charges, clarifying that water service providers are responsible for the fees as part of their septage management services.
Suspension of Fee Collection
According to Mayor Lazatin, the collection of the septage fee is currently suspended while the Sangguniang Panlungsod reviews proposed amendments to the existing ordinance. This temporary halt is part of an ongoing evaluation to ensure the policy remains fair and beneficial to all residents. The mayor noted that this move aligns with the national government's directive to defer "unnecessary" expenses amid ongoing economic challenges, reflecting a broader effort to manage costs effectively.
Importance of Environmental Compliance
Mayor Lazatin stressed the critical importance of complying with the Clean Water Act, particularly in maintaining proper sewage systems to protect both the environment and public health. He explained that the construction and proper maintenance of septic tanks are essential to prevent contaminants from seeping into the soil and water sources, thereby safeguarding community well-being and natural resources.
Assurances to Residents
The city government has assured residents that the collection of the septage fee will not be implemented until the ordinance review is completed and its provisions are clearly defined. This assurance aims to provide transparency and avoid any further confusion, ensuring that residents are informed about the process and timeline for any potential fee reinstatement.
