Governor Pamela Baricuatro Elected Chair of Visayas Development Committee

In a significant move for regional governance, Governor Pamela Baricuatro of Cebu has been selected as the new chairperson of the Regional Development Committee–Visayas Area Committee (RD Com–VAC). This appointment was made through a consensus among the four governors of the Visayas region, underscoring a unified approach to economic planning.

Consensus Decision at Reorganizational Meeting

The selection occurred during a reorganizational meeting held on Monday, January 26, 2026, at a hotel in Cebu City. The meeting was presided over by the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev), highlighting its importance in shaping regional development strategies.

Attendees included chairpersons and vice chairpersons from the Regional Development Councils (RDCs) across the entire Visayas. Key participants were:

  • Governor Jose Enrique Miraflores of Aklan (RDC Region 6 Chair)
  • Governor Manuel Sagarbarria of Negros Oriental (RDC–Negros Island Region Chair)
  • Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla of Leyte (RDC Region 8 Chair)

These three governors were also appointed as co-chairpersons of the committee, ensuring broad representation and collaborative leadership.

Baricuatro's Role and Responsibilities

Governor Baricuatro will succeed former Bacolod Mayor Alfredo Benitez and will serve from 2026 to 2028. As chair of the RD Com–VAC, her role is crucial in strengthening the unified voice of the Visayas within national economic and development plans.

The RD Com–VAC functions as a vital coordinating body that links the RDCs to the national government. Its primary objectives include:

  1. Ensuring that the priorities of the Visayas region are properly aligned
  2. Securing appropriate policy support and funding from the government

In her capacity as chair, Baricuatro will lead efforts to harmonize development plans across the Visayas regions. She will represent the committee in discussions with the Economic and Development Council and other national agencies. Additionally, her focus will be on advancing strategic initiatives in key areas such as:

  • Infrastructure development
  • Tourism promotion
  • Investment attraction
  • Other critical projects in the Visayas
