The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has officially declared the entire Holy Week period as peaceful and orderly, with no significant incidents recorded at the various locations where religious activities were held. This successful outcome is attributed to the robust police presence spearheaded by CCPO Chief Police Colonel George Ylanan, as confirmed by Police Lt. Col. Franco Rodulf Oriol, the information officer for the CCPO.
Enhanced Security Measures Implemented
According to Oriol, the police force established multiple police assistance desks at key points across the city to ensure public safety. These desks were strategically positioned at bus terminals, churches, ports, and other areas experiencing high foot traffic and gatherings during the religious observances. The proactive deployment aimed to deter criminal activities and provide immediate assistance to residents and visitors alike.
Minor Incidents Recorded Despite Overall Calm
While the overall atmosphere remained tranquil, police stations did document a series of minor incidents throughout the week. The reported cases included six instances of physical injury, two burglaries, nine thefts, eighteen vehicular accidents, and one shooting incident that occurred on Black Saturday. Oriol emphasized that these isolated events did not disrupt the stringent security protocols maintained across the Holy Week festivities.
He further clarified that the minor incidents had no substantial impact on the overall peace and order situation, underscoring the effectiveness of the police operations in place. The coordinated efforts ensured that the religious celebrations proceeded smoothly without major disruptions.
Collaborative Efforts Praised by Provincial Police Chief
In a related development, Police Colonel Abubakar Mangelen Jr., the chief of the Cebu Police Provincial Office, highlighted the crucial role played by the Provincial Government of Cebu and the local community in fostering a peaceful Holy Week. He noted that the collaboration between law enforcement agencies, government officials, and citizens was instrumental in achieving this positive outcome, demonstrating a united front in maintaining public safety during the significant religious period.
The combined initiatives, including community engagement and visible police patrols, contributed to a secure environment, allowing devotees to participate in religious activities without fear. This report reflects a successful security strategy that balanced vigilance with community cooperation, setting a precedent for future large-scale events in the region.
