A violent confrontation during an anti-drug operation in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao has left one suspect dead and four others in custody, according to authorities. The incident, which unfolded on Thursday, March 12, 2026, highlights ongoing efforts to combat drug-related activities in the region.
Deadly Shootout Erupts in Nabundas Village
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PDEA-Barmm) reported that the operation targeted a drug den in Nabundas village, Malidegao, within the Special Geographic Area. The main subject, identified only by the alias Ola, was killed after a fierce exchange of gunfire that lasted approximately 20 minutes.
PDEA-Barmm officials stated that Ola initiated the shootout by opening fire on operatives, who were forced to return fire in self-defense. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Ola was pronounced dead upon arrival by attending physicians. The agency confirmed that the drug den maintained by Ola was successfully dismantled as part of the operation.
Four Suspects Apprehended During Pot Session
In addition to the fatal encounter, four individuals were arrested at the scene. They were caught engaging in a pot session inside Ola's drug den and have been identified through their aliases as Gapor, 32; Edward, 34; Mata, 19; and Butsokoy, 45. All four are now facing serious legal consequences for their alleged involvement in drug activities.
Authorities seized a significant amount of evidence from the dismantled den, including approximately 20 grams of shabu. The drugs were packed in 27 heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets, with an estimated street value of P136,000. Various drug paraphernalia were also confiscated, underscoring the scale of the operation.
Weapons and Additional Evidence Recovered
The recovery efforts yielded further incriminating items, such as a caliber 7.65 pistol, three rounds of ammunition, a belt bag, two identification cards, cash, five mobile phones, and a rifle scope. These findings suggest a well-equipped and potentially dangerous drug operation that posed a significant threat to public safety.
PDEA-Barmm has announced that the arrested suspects will be charged under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act. The operation was a collaborative effort, conducted by PDEA-Barmm operatives with support from troops of the 40th Infantry Battalion, demonstrating a coordinated approach to law enforcement in the region.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with anti-drug campaigns in areas like the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region. While the operation led to the dismantling of a drug den and multiple arrests, it also resulted in a tragic loss of life, highlighting the volatile nature of such confrontations.
