Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, that intelligence reports have located businessman Charlie "Atong" Ang in Vietnam. During a telephone interview with reporters, Remulla disclosed that authorities received credible information indicating Ang is currently hiding in the Southeast Asian country.
Intelligence Report Under Verification
"It is an intelligence report and we are following it up and for confirmation yun sa Vietnam authorities," stated Remulla. He emphasized that while the report is being actively pursued, coordination with Vietnamese authorities is essential to verify the details and confirm Ang's exact whereabouts.
Possible Escape Route Through Mindanao
Remulla speculated that Ang may have fled the Philippines via a backdoor channel in Mindanao, as there is no official record of his departure from the Bureau of Immigration. This theory raises concerns about potential security lapses in border control measures, particularly in the southern region of the country.
"Wala akong alam sa culture nila doon. Hindi ko alam kung bakit doon. Hindi ko rin alam kung sino 'yung connect niya doon. It just came to my attention na nandoon siya," added Remulla, highlighting the ongoing investigation into Ang's connections and motives for choosing Vietnam as a hideout.
Continued Manhunt Operations in the Philippines
Despite the international lead, Remulla assured that manhunt operations against Ang will persist within the Philippines. He revealed that authorities have conducted approximately 200 raids in their search for the fugitive businessman.
Ang is facing serious charges, including kidnapping with homicide and serious illegal detention, related to the disappearance of several sabongero (cockfighting enthusiasts). These allegations have intensified the urgency of the manhunt, with law enforcement agencies mobilizing resources across multiple jurisdictions.
The case underscores broader issues of cross-border criminal activities and the challenges of international cooperation in fugitive apprehension. As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on leveraging both domestic and international intelligence to bring Ang to justice.
