In a significant crackdown on illegal narcotics, operatives from the Regional Police Drug Enforcement Unit in Western Visayas successfully apprehended a high-value individual and seized a substantial quantity of shabu valued at P1.36 million. The meticulously planned late-night buy-bust operation took place in Barangay Abilay Norte, Oton, Iloilo, on March 19, 2026, marking a critical victory in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region.
Details of the Operation and Arrest
The arrest occurred at precisely 11:54 p.m. within the Lumina Homes Subdivision, where law enforcement officers confiscated 200 grams of shabu. The suspect, identified only by the alias Jan2x, is a 37-year-old resident of the same barangay. Police records indicate that Jan2x has a history of prior arrests for violations of Republic Act 9165, highlighting a pattern of involvement in illicit drug activities.
Police Recovery and Commendation
During the operation, authorities recovered ten plastic sachets and three knot-tied transparent plastic bags containing the illegal substance. Additionally, they seized buy-bust money, proceeds from the illegal transaction, and empty plastic sachets as evidence. Police Brigadier General Josefino Ligan, director of Police Regional Office 6, praised the efforts of the involved units, emphasizing their commitment to achieving a drug-free region.
"I commend everyone for a job well done. This accomplishment speaks volumes about what we can achieve when we work together for a common good. PRO 6 assures the public that they will not stop until a drug-free region will be achieved," Ligan stated, underscoring the collaborative nature of the operation.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The successful bust was the result of a month-long surveillance operation conducted by RPDEU 6, which coordinated closely with the Regional Intelligence Unit 6, the Provincial Drug Enforcement Group – Special Operations Unit 6, and the Oton Municipal Police Station. Investigations revealed that Jan2x operated his drug distribution network within Iloilo City and nearby municipalities, indicating a broader impact on local communities.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect will face charges for violations of Section 5 and Section 11 of RA 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. The seized drugs are scheduled to undergo forensic laboratory examination to support the legal case, while Jan2x remains in police custody pending the formal filing of charges.
Public Appeal and Broader Implications
In light of this operation, authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to support the National Government's campaign against illegal drugs in Western Visayas. This arrest not only disrupts a key player in the local drug trade but also serves as a stark reminder of the persistent efforts by law enforcement to combat narcotics proliferation and ensure community safety across the region.
