Man Falsely Claims LTO Authority in Cebu City Traffic Incident
In a startling incident in Cebu City, a man was exposed for impersonating a deputized agent of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) during a traffic violation on Friday, March 20, 2026. Authorities have confirmed that the individual had no official affiliation with the agency, leading to potential criminal charges.
Traffic Stop Uncovers Deception
Around 4:30 p.m. on N. Bacalso Avenue, personnel from the Cebu City Transportation Office flagged down a private vehicle for illegally entering the designated Bus Rapid Transit lane. During the apprehension, a passenger in the vehicle, wearing a GONZCAF Security ID sling, intervened by instructing the driver not to present a valid driver’s license. He boldly claimed to be a deputized LTO agent, asserting authority over the situation.
The individual reportedly took photographs of the traffic enforcers and threatened to report them to the LTO, escalating the confrontation. However, subsequent verification by LTO 7 revealed that the man had no deputation or any official connection to the agency, debunking his claims.
LTO Response and Legal Actions
LTO 7 Director Atty. Wendel Dinglasan stated that the agency is actively evaluating the filing of criminal charges against the individual for impersonating an LTO deputized agent. This move underscores the LTO's commitment to maintaining the integrity of its deputation program and preventing misuse of its authority.
The LTO has reiterated its warning to the public against falsely claiming agency authority, emphasizing the serious consequences of such actions. Authorities are urging citizens to report any instances of individuals misrepresenting themselves as LTO personnel to the nearest LTO office or law enforcement agency to help curb such fraudulent behavior.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges in traffic enforcement and the importance of verifying credentials during roadside encounters. It serves as a reminder for the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with legitimate authorities to ensure road safety and legal compliance.
