The observance of Holy Week across Negros Island was marked by a notable absence of major disturbances, with authorities confirming a generally peaceful and orderly period from March 29 to April 5, 2026. According to police reports released on Sunday, April 5, 2026, the region experienced no significant untoward incidents, attributing this success to comprehensive security measures and strategic planning.
Police Deployment and Security Measures
Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, chief of the Public Information Office for the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR), detailed the extensive efforts undertaken to ensure public safety. Over 1,000 police personnel were mobilized from various units, including the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (Nocppo), Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (Norppo), Siquijor Police Provincial Office (SPPO), and Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO).
These officers were strategically positioned in key locations such as churches, pilgrimage sites, major highways, transport terminals, commercial establishments, beach areas, resorts, and other tourist destinations. This deployment aimed to enhance police visibility and facilitate effective crowd and traffic management throughout the region.
Incident Management and Public Cooperation
During the monitoring period, a total of 36 incidents were recorded across Negros Island. Malong emphasized that the majority of these were non-index crimes, meaning they were minor and manageable in nature. All incidents were promptly addressed through swift police response and effective coordination, preventing any escalation and maintaining overall peace and order.
Close coordination with local government units and partner agencies played a crucial role in the smooth conduct of both religious and recreational activities. Assistance desks and police help stations were established to provide immediate support to the public, further contributing to the orderly observance.
Success of Security Operations
PRO-NIR has deemed the Holy Week security operations a resounding success. The generally peaceful observance across Negros Island was made possible through proactive policing, strategic deployment of resources, and the cooperation of the community in upholding peace and order. This outcome underscores the effectiveness of coordinated efforts in preserving the solemnity of this significant religious period while ensuring public safety.
