PCO Chief Takes Legal Action Against Fake News Spreaders
Acting Presidential Communications Office Secretary Dave Gomez has formally approached the Department of Justice to initiate an investigation into individuals responsible for disseminating false information online. During his visit to the department today, Gomez filed a complaint targeting a specific social media page for allegedly fabricating stories.
Targeting Malasakit News Pilipinas
In particular, Gomez is seeking to identify the administrators behind 'Malasakit News Pilipinas' to hold them accountable. He believes these actors aim to incite panic and confusion among the public, which could potentially disrupt social order and compromise individual security. This move aligns with recent warnings issued by his office against those spreading fake news, emphasizing that they will face legal consequences.
Three Fake News Posts Under Scrutiny
Gomez highlighted three specific fake news posts that he wants investigated to pinpoint the perpetrators and bring them to court for explanation. These include:
- A claim about an energy lockdown intended to scam the public into purchasing solar panels.
- False reports of a fuel shortage.
- An alleged emergency lockdown.
All these posts have been dismissed as baseless lies, and Gomez is pushing for accountability from those behind them.
Protecting the First Family
He also stressed that his office will not tolerate any fake news or damaging information targeting the first family of President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. Gomez issued a stern warning that anyone involved in spreading such misinformation against the presidential family will be prosecuted.
