The Philippine National Police (PNP) is finalizing security preparations for the Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that all necessary arrangements are being polished for the trial.
Security Deployment Details
According to the PNP chief, aside from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), other units will be assigned to maintain peace and order outside the Senate. This aims to ensure sufficient forces for regular security rotations. NCRPO personnel have been deployed around the Senate since May 11, following the reappearance of Senator Ronald dela Rosa and an attempt to serve an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Coordination with Senate and House
The PNP chief said they will coordinate with the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms for security measures inside and outside the chamber. The police will also collaborate with the House Sergeant-at-Arms to protect members of the prosecution panel, while being ready to provide security assistance to private defense lawyers.
The PNP leadership emphasized that they are aware the situation could trigger strong emotions on both sides of the political spectrum. Thus, they aim to ensure a peaceful process and prevent any incidents that could threaten public safety.
