Sandiganbayan Denies Estrada's Impeachment Trial Request

The Sandiganbayan has denied Senator Jinggoy Estrada's motion to attend the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, ruling that his request does not constitute an emergency or compelling reason for temporary leave from detention.

Court Ruling on Estrada's Motion

In its order, the anti-graft court stated: "This court cannot consider the accused-movant’s request to be in the nature of emergency or compelling temporary leave. While an impeachment trial is of paramount constitutional importance, its significance does not, by itself, provide a basis for the grant of his request."

The court further explained that impeachment proceedings are expected to be lengthy, and Estrada's request could not be accommodated given the limited exceptions for detainees.

Implications of the Decision

"Allowing the accused-movant to attend the impeachment trial would virtually make him a free man with all the privileges appurtenant to his position," the order read.

Estrada is currently detained pending his trial for plunder charges related to the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam. His request to attend the impeachment trial was seen as an attempt to participate in a high-profile political process, but the Sandiganbayan maintained strict adherence to detention rules.
