Ombudsman Firmly Advances Plunder Case Against Former Congressional Leaders
The Office of the Ombudsman has declared it is treating with utmost seriousness the cases being prepared against individuals implicated in anomalous flood control projects. This point was strongly emphasized by Ombudsman Jesus Crispin 'Boying' Remulla during a recent press briefing held by the anti-graft body.
Targets and Timeline of the Planned Case
Remulla's statement aligns with the office's announcement of its plan to file a plunder case against two former highest-ranking leaders from both chambers of Congress. He confirmed that preparations are actively underway to formally charge former House of Representatives Speaker Martin Romualdez and former Senate President Chiz Escudero with plunder.
According to Ombudsman Remulla, the case involves elements of conspiracy or collusion by the mentioned officials concerning the processing of the national budget during the years 2024 and 2025. The formal plunder case against the former congressional leaders is planned and expected to be filed next month, in May.
Basis and Broader Legal Actions
When questioned about what specifically prompted the Ombudsman to build this plunder case, Remulla declined to provide further details. He insisted that the case to be filed against Rep. Romualdez and Sen. Escudero is based on testimonies from witnesses during the Senate's investigation into the matter.
Currently, preparations at the Office of the Ombudsman continue to gather necessary documents and ensure the case is solidly constructed. Remulla also highlighted that this is not the only case they intend to file; he urged the public to anticipate many more cases emerging this April and the following month of May.
