DoJ Reminds Schools of Duty to Protect Students Under Parental Authority
DoJ Reminds Schools of Duty to Protect Students

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has reminded schools of their responsibility or obligation to protect students. Justice Secretary Atty. Fredderick Vida emphasized that educational institutions must not forget their duty, especially towards students entrusted to them by their parents.

Substitute Parental Authority

Secretary Vida explained that there is a concept called 'substitute parental authority' when a student is inside the school premises, which becomes the responsibility of the university. He stressed that this obligation covers both curricular and non-curricular activities of the student in their school.

Investigation into Ateneo Deaths

Justice Secretary Vida shared that they are already looking into or investigating the liability of the university in the deaths of Rene Baterbonia and Divin Adili, both players of the Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball team. Investigators will examine not only the responsibility of the team coach but also the university and other responsible parties.

The selection of the location where the activity that led to the death of the two athletes was conducted is also included in the investigation to determine if there was negligence or deficiency. Nevertheless, the Department of Justice assured that they will not abandon the case and will ensure that the investigation is based on gathered evidence.
