Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas announced the distribution of 100 metal detectors to public schools in the city, set to be completed before or on July 20, 2026. The initiative aims to strengthen security inspections and ensure student safety.
Mayor's Statement on Student Safety
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, July 7, Mayor Gullas emphasized the importance of creating a secure learning environment. “They deserve classrooms where they can focus on their lessons instead of their fears, hallways where they build friendships instead of anxiety, and schools where they know that every adult around them is looking out for them,” he said.
Training and Collaboration with PNP
In coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP), security guards will be trained on the proper use of metal detectors, appropriate frisking procedures, and incident reporting protocols. The city will also conduct orientations and strengthen anti-bullying measures to ensure prompt response to every reported incident.
Background: Online Threat Leads to Class Suspension
The move comes after an online threat against Talisay City Elementary School and Talisay City National High School (TCNHS) on July 5. A Facebook user named “Zane Bacalso” threatened to bring a weapon, claiming his sibling was bullied. This led to class suspensions on Monday, July 6. Authorities are still investigating the source of the threat and are gathering evidence, according to a SunStar Cebu report on July 6. Police have possible leads and continue to collect additional evidence.
