Filipino Ultrarunners Triumph at GOMU World Championships in Italy
Filipino endurance athletes have once again demonstrated their formidable prowess on the international stage, achieving remarkable results at the prestigious GOMU World Championships. The event was held as part of the Cinisello Balsamo Running Festival in Italy from March 28 to 30, 2026, marking a significant shift from its previous location in Poland.
Gold Medal Victory for Luisa Nuñez
Leading the impressive Filipino contingent was Paris-based ultrarunner Luisa Nuñez, who secured the gold medal in the highly competitive women's 24-hour category. Nuñez completed an astounding 161.1 kilometers over 115 loops, a feat that highlighted not only her exceptional physical stamina but also the profound mental fortitude she cultivated during her rigorous training regimen.
In a heartfelt social media post, Nuñez expressed her gratitude, stating, "To the Pinoy runners group based in Milan, Italy, who always think positively to achieve the goal. A great example of leadership when it comes to running enthusiasm. I am grateful to be part of your team." Her words underscore the strong sense of community and support among Filipino athletes abroad.
Strong Performances Across Categories
Milan-based Rachelle Cabasa also made a significant impact, earning the bronze medal in the same women's 24-hour division with a distance of 125.595 kilometers across 89 loops. The silver medal was claimed by Anna Rybitw of Poland, who completed 141 kilometers over 101 loops.
After her exhausting run, Cabasa shared her joy and fatigue, saying, "We're happy. Dami nakakuha ng medals (Many won medals), but for now gusto ko matulog (I want to sleep)." This candid remark reflects the intense physical demands of ultrarunning and the relief that follows such a challenging competition.
In the men's 24-hour division, the podium was dominated by European athletes. Poland's Rafal Wos and Wojciech Sip took first and second place with 145 loops (203.9 km) and 141 loops (197.6 km), respectively, while Italy's Giorgio Basso secured third with 139 loops (194.3 km).
