Nearly 1,000 Athletes for ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championship

Close to 1,000 athletes, including representatives from eight foreign countries, are expected to compete in the ICTSI Philippine Athletic Championships presented by the Philippine Sports Commission. The event will take place from June 10 to 14 at the New Clark Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.

PATAFA President Highlights Event Significance

Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) President Terry Capistrano emphasized the importance of the championship. “The ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championship is more than just a premier showcase of talent; it is a vital ecosystem for the growth of Philippine track and field,” he said. “Gathering our nation’s finest athletes alongside international contenders at a world-class venue like New Clark City raises the competitive bar for everyone.”

International Participation Confirmed

According to PATAFA Secretary General Jasper Tanhueco, the confirmed participating countries are Chinese Taipei, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Samoa, and the United States. “So far, we already had 945 registered athletes for the competition, and we could hit 1,000 once the complete list is in,” Tanhueco noted. South Korea has the largest foreign contingent with 15 athletes, including four in the men’s open division and one in the women’s open division, with the rest competing in Under-18 and Under-20 categories. Papua New Guinea is sending 12 athletes, while Indonesia and Singapore each have 10.

Support from Philippine Sports Commission

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Patrick Gregorio expressed full support for the event. “The PSC is fully behind the PATAFA and the ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championship. We are also deeply grateful to BCDA president Joshua ‘Jake’ Bingcang for ensuring these world-class facilities are ready for our athletes,” he said.

Local Athletes and Overseas Contingent

On the local side, a total of 870 athletes, including those from the national pool and various local clubs, are vying for honors. Overseas-based Filipino athletes will be led by Olympic Games veterans Kristina Knott and Lauren Hoffman. The championship promises to be a significant platform for showcasing athletic talent and fostering international camaraderie in track and field.
