After a stellar five-year career in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), Cebuano basketball standout Nicael Cabanero is setting his sights on an international move. The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers team captain has revealed his ambition to play in the Korean Basketball League (KBL) as his next destination.
From Lapu-Lapu City to International Courts
In an exclusive interview with SunStar Cebu, the Lapu-Lapu City native outlined his post-UAAP plans. "I really plan to play in the KBL. If not in the KBL, I will play in the MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League)," Cabanero stated. His departure from the UAAP is marked by an impressive record, having been a three-time scoring champion and a two-time member of the Mythical Five.
Cabanero recently showcased his skills in Cebu City, playing for the star-studded Chase Tower Runs in a semi-commercial tournament at the City Sports Institute Gym from December 16 to 21. His performance was so dominant that he was named the Finals MVP of the competition.
Domestic Plans and the PBA Draft
Should the opportunity to play abroad not materialize, Cabanero is prepared to join the domestic Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. He expressed a specific desire to be part of the Cebu Greats franchise if he enters the MPBL.
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Draft is also in his long-term plans. However, Cabanero noted that there will be no PBA draft in 2026, meaning he would have to wait until 2027 to enter the country's premier professional league.
Following in the Footsteps of a Fellow Cebuano
If Cabanero successfully achieves his dream of playing in the KBL, he will become only the second Cebuano cager to compete in the prestigious South Korean league. He would follow Karl Tamayo, a native of Talisay City, who has already paved the way for Filipino players in Korea.
Basketball runs in the Cabanero family. Nicael is the son of Dominic Cabanero, who coaches at the University of San Carlos (USC) Elementary. His journey from a local Cebu talent to a UAAP star and now a prospective international professional is being closely watched by fans across the Philippines.
