Basketball Returns to Cebu for a Humanitarian Cause
In a heartwarming response to the devastation left by Typhoon Tino, the East Asia Super League (EASL) is set to bring high-level basketball back to Cebu. This Saturday, November 15, 2025, the Cebu Coliseum will host a Group B elimination match between the Meralco Bolts and the Macau Black Bears, with all proceeds from the game being donated to the victims of the recent calamity.
Typhoon Tino, which struck on November 4, resulted in over a hundred fatalities and caused massive destruction across the region. This charity event, held in partnership with the Cebu City government, offers basketball-loving Cebuanos a chance to lift their spirits while contributing to a vital relief effort. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
Meralco Bolts: Seeking Momentum with Key Players
The Meralco Bolts, carrying the flag for the PBA, enter this crucial matchup with a 1-2 record, placing them third in Group B. They are coming off a significant 85-76 victory against the Taoyuan Pauian Pilots on November 8 in Ilagan, Isabela.
In that win, the Bolts were powered by a dynamic duo. Ismael Romero, the Puerto Rican import, is anticipated to be the key force, anchoring both the team's offense and interior defense against Macau. He and Iranian point guard Vahedi Mohammadsina each dropped 22 points. Romero secured a double-double with 14 rebounds, while Mohammadsina dished out 7 assists. Strong support came from Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (15 points) and Chris Newsome (14 points).
Macau Black Bears: A New Season with a Potent Lineup
This game will mark the season debut for the Macau Black Bears. The team is eager to build upon their 3-3 record from the 2024-25 campaign, which included a notable upset over the New Taipei Kings.
Macau's roster is filled with talent. The team is led by Phoenix Shackelford, Lao Chong Pong, Omari Peek-Green, Torrence Watson, and Damian Chong Qui. Chong Qui returns after a stellar season where he led the entire EASL in assists, averaging 9.0 per game for a record-setting total of 54 assists. Both Shackelford and Peek-Green, standouts from U.S. college basketball, are expected to play pivotal roles in their first EASL appearance.
Fans can expect a physical and thrilling encounter as both teams feature star-studded lineups. Beyond the competition for victory, the true winner will be the community of Cebu, as this match serves a greater purpose in aiding recovery efforts.
