The Meralco Bolts authored a stunning playoff comeback, defying the odds to secure the final spot in the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup semifinals. The seventh-seeded squad conquered a twice-to-win disadvantage, eliminating the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in their quarterfinal series.
Newsome Leads Bolts' Semis-Clinching Victory
After a decisive 96-79 win on Saturday, December 27, 2025, the Bolts completed the job with a 98-89 clincher on Monday, December 29, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Star guard Chris Newsome was magnificent, pouring in a game-high 31 points and delivering crucial baskets in the final stretch to seal the victory.
This win propels Meralco into the final four, where they will join early qualifiers San Miguel Beer, Barangay Ginebra, and TNT Tropang Ginebra. The Bolts mirrored Ginebra's feat from the previous night, as the Gin Kings also survived their own twice-to-win challenge against Converge.
Norwood's Storied Career Comes to an End
The series marked the end of an era, as it concluded the illustrious 18-year PBA career of Rain or Shine captain Gabe Norwood. Following the final buzzer, players from both teams and fans paid tribute to the retiring legend.
"I wanted to end the journey with a championship, but kudos to Meralco on their great effort in this game," said Norwood. The George Mason University alum expressed profound gratitude to the Elasto Painters organization, stating, "They took me as a son."
Bolts Set Semis Date with TNT
With the quarterfinal hurdle cleared, the Bolts now prepare for a best-of-seven semifinal showdown against the TNT Tropang Ginebra. The other semifinal pairing will feature San Miguel Beer versus Barangay Ginebra. The semifinals are scheduled to tip off on January 4, 2026.
Meralco's victory was a complete team effort. Chris Banchero provided strong support with 21 points, while CJ Cansino and Bong Quinto added 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Bolts seized control of the game after trailing by six points early, taking a lead by halftime and maintaining their tough defense and execution until the end.
Rain or Shine fought valiantly in pursuit of a fifth consecutive semifinal appearance but ultimately fell short. The team struggled to compensate for the absence of injured key big men Keith Datu and Beau Belga.
