NLEX Road Warriors Target Early Momentum Against Magnolia Hotshots
Fresh from a thrilling come-from-behind victory, the NLEX Road Warriors are poised to build early momentum as they aim for a second win against the Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots. This pivotal clash in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 50 Commissioner's Cup is scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Ynares Center-Montalban.
Hard-Fought Opening Win Sets the Stage
In their conference opener last Friday, March 13, the Road Warriors narrowly edged out the scrappy Blackwater Bossing with a final score of 84-81. Securing an early win is crucial for NLEX, as their upcoming schedule features a gauntlet of traditional heavyweight contenders over the next three outings.
Star guard Robert Bolick, who delivered a clutch performance with 24 points against Blackwater, highlighted the importance of this initial victory. "Importante sa amin itong first game kasi 'yung next three games namin championship contenders," Bolick stated, referring to looming challenges against Magnolia, defending champion TNT, and crowd-favorite Barangay Ginebra in the coming weeks. He added, "So kailangan namin ng momentum papunta sa doon," emphasizing the need for a winning streak early in the conference.
Team Chemistry Still a Work in Progress
Despite the opening-day success, NLEX head coach Jong Uichico admits the team remains a work in progress, especially after integrating new players into the rotation. "Medyo nagkakapaan," Uichico honestly assessed, noting that any team making personnel changes goes through this phase. He acknowledged that veteran poise, rather than fluid execution, was key to securing the win. "We're still looking for the right combination, chemistry but mabuti na lang na-overcome namin yung magandang laro ng Blackwater. I think it was our experience in the end na lang (that pulled the team through)," he explained.
New Recruits Make Immediate Impact
Fortunately for Uichico, new additions are already proving their worth. Schonny Winston, a high-value acquisition from Converge, sparked the team in his NLEX debut with 10 points, five rebounds, and four steals, showcasing defensive prowess. Meanwhile, import Cady Lalane anchored the paint effectively, contributing 22 points and 16 rebounds to outlast Blackwater's reinforcement Daniel Ochefu, who posted an impressive 16 points and 16 rebounds.
Motivated Magnolia Aims to Avoid 0-2 Start
The Road Warriors now face a highly motivated Magnolia side desperate to avoid an early 0-2 hole. The Hotshots struggled in their opener, falling 101-98 to the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters on Friday, as they failed to find their rhythm. This sets the stage for an intense showdown in the main game at 7:30 p.m., while the Fuel Masters and Giant Risers open the Sunday double-header at 5:15 p.m.
