In a major step towards global recognition, the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association (Amma) has spearheaded the creation of a new worldwide governing body for amateur Mixed Martial Arts. This historic move is a direct push to see MMA included in the Olympic Games in the future.
A Unified Vision for a Global Sport
Amma president Gordan Tang highlighted the need for this development, pointing out that while MMA boasts hundreds of millions of fans globally, it has lacked a single, cohesive international authority. Tang emphasized the power of collective effort, stating he has witnessed the achievements possible when a shared vision unites stakeholders.
The formal decision was made during an online assembly of Amma leaders on November 27, 2025. This meeting confirmed the establishment of the Federation of International Mixed Martial Arts (Fimma).
Responding to the Call from Athletes
President Tang explained that Fimma is a direct answer to persistent requests from athletes and national federations worldwide. These groups have long sought an International Federation that could bring the sport under one umbrella of global governance and standards.
"We are ready to collaborate with any and all organizations that share our commitment to protecting and promoting the global interests of MMA and its athletes," Tang added, signaling an open and inclusive approach.
The Road to the Olympic Dream
In a significant revelation, Tang confirmed that the organization has already initiated discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The primary objective of these talks is to pursue official Olympic recognition, a milestone that would cement MMA's status among the world's premier sports.
Amma director general Galastein Tan outlined Fimma's athlete-centric mission. The federation is focused on building world-class competition platforms that prioritize competitor safety and streamline events. The goal is to unite the best athletes under one professional organization.
The momentum for MMA's inclusion in major multi-sport events is already building. The sport was part of the 2025 Asian Youth Games and is set to make its debut as a medal event at the prestigious 2026 Asian Games.
