Bangsamoro Government Extends Support Following Tragic Death of Young Athlete
The Bangsamoro government has solemnly pledged comprehensive assistance to the family of an 11-year-old student-athlete whose untimely death cast a profound shadow over the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Athletic Association (Barmmaa) Meet 2026. Officials expressed deep sorrow and grief over the heartbreaking incident, which occurred during the regional sports event that gathered thousands of participants.
Chief Minister's Condolences and Immediate Response
Bangsamoro Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua, on Tuesday, April 14, publicly assured unwavering support for the bereaved family following the tragic passing of the young sepak takraw player from Lamitan City, Basilan. In an official statement, Macacua extended his heartfelt condolences, describing the loss as particularly devastating for the youth sector of the region.
"We express our deepest sorrow over the untimely passing of an 11-year-old sepak takraw player from Lamitan City, Basilan, who participated in the Barmmaa Meet 2026 in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte," Macacua stated. He emphasized that the regional government, through the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education (MBHTE) and other relevant agencies, is actively coordinating with event organizers to provide immediate assistance and ensure the continued safety of all remaining participants.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Authorities have identified the victim as a Grade 5 student from Lamitan City who was scheduled to compete in sepak takraw events. According to police and health officials, the child tragically choked while eating dinner at approximately 8 p.m. on April 12 at a makeshift billeting area in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte.
Emergency responders swiftly rushed the student-athlete to a local district hospital. The child was subsequently transferred to the Cotabato Regional Medical Center for advanced care. Despite all efforts, doctors declared the victim deceased past 11 p.m. on the same day.
This devastating incident occurred on the opening day of the weeklong Barmmaa Meet, which brought together approximately 6,600 student-athletes, coaches, and officials from ten school divisions across the entire Bangsamoro region.
Sports Event Overshadowed by Tragedy
The Bangsamoro government had formally inaugurated the Barmmaa Meet on April 12 in Parang, with Chief Minister Macacua and senior education officials leading the ceremonies. Now in its fifth consecutive year, the event carried the unifying theme "Stronger Together Through Sports" and featured more than twenty different sporting competitions.
The opening program included a vibrant parade of delegates, colorful cultural performances, and the ceremonial lighting of the urn, followed by a fireworks display. In his earlier inspirational message, Macacua had highlighted themes of unity and youth development as essential pillars for building a stronger Bangsamoro community.
Enhanced Safety Measures and Community Support
In the wake of this tragedy, authorities have announced they will conduct a thorough review of all safety protocols for large-scale sporting events, particularly those involving minors. Education officials and event organizers are expected to reassess health standards and emergency response measures comprehensively to prevent similar incidents in the future.
