The Milo Best Center Clinic is set to make a highly anticipated return to Davao City, with sessions scheduled from April 27 to May 2 at the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai covered court. This grassroots basketball program aims to nurture young talent in the region, continuing its legacy of fostering athletic skills among children.
Event Details and Partnership
During the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum, city coordinator Michael Chad Bouffard provided an in-depth briefing on the clinic. "This is our second year partnering with the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai for the clinic," Bouffard stated, emphasizing the venue's crucial role. The Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai is once again hosting the event free of charge, making it accessible to a wider audience of aspiring athletes.
Program Structure and Eligibility
The clinic is open to children in the 12-under and 14-under divisions, offering a comprehensive training experience. Coaches from Manila will lead the sessions, which are designed not only for skill development but also as preparation for the upcoming Milo SBP/Passerelle tournaments. These tournaments include city eliminations, regional finals, and national championships, providing a competitive pathway for participants.
Participants will undergo a screening process to ensure a focused learning environment. The clinic will feature:
- Three-on-three games to enhance teamwork and strategy.
- Five-on-five matches to simulate real-game scenarios.
To qualify for the SBP/Passerelle tournaments, schools must field at least five players who attended the clinic. However, only five school entries will be accommodated, adding an element of selectivity to the process.
Expansion Plans and Regional Impact
Bouffard revealed that organizers are targeting regional eliminations by November, building on momentum from recent events in Baguio and Pagadian. These successes have inspired expansion plans, particularly in the National Capital Region and other parts of Luzon, aiming to broaden the program's reach and impact.
He also praised local schools for their dedication to improving their level of play, citing Ateneo de Davao University as a prime example of steady progress. Bouffard highlighted the importance of strong program management and coaching, noting that these elements help push players to perform beyond expectations.
Inclusivity and Future Initiatives
The clinic welcomes female participants from grade school and high school, promoting gender inclusivity in sports. However, organizers are considering a separate event specifically for girls to better develop the women's game, addressing the need for tailored training opportunities.
With nearly 13 years of experience as a Davao-based sports organizer, Bouffard underscored the clinic's long-standing role in grassroots basketball development since its inception in 1979. This enduring commitment reflects the program's dedication to nurturing young athletes and fostering a love for the sport across generations.
