Philippine Weightlifters Dominate with 36 Medals at Regional Championships in China
The Philippine weightlifting team delivered an outstanding performance at the recently concluded 2026 East/Southeast Asia Subregional Championships, held in Hainan, China. According to the Powerlifting Association of the Philippines (PAP), the athletes amassed a total of 36 medals, showcasing their strength and skill on the international stage.
Medal Haul and Special Achievements
The medal count included an impressive 22 gold medals, 10 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals. In addition to this remarkable haul, the team earned three special awards and set two new national records, highlighting their exceptional capabilities in the competition.
The medalists featured a diverse group of athletes, such as Adrian Perillo, James de Luna, Juan Teodoro Zabala, Jose Virgil Perez, Ryant Relos, Emilion Florendo, Audrick Khong Hun, John Sorima, Rayven Villasotes, Anya Pinzon, Jomara Chan, and Clara Buenconsejo. Their collective efforts contributed significantly to the team's success.
Record-Breaking Performances and Team Honors
Notably, Ryant Relos, Jomara Chan, and Anya Pinzon established new national and individual lift records, demonstrating their prowess in the sport. The Philippine team also received the Best Team honors in the Men’s Open and Men’s Masters I divisions, underscoring their dominance in these categories.
Further accolades included Jose Virgil Perez being named Best Lifter, while Juan Teodoro Zabala, who made his international tournament debut, secured third place in the Best Lifter rankings. These achievements reflect the depth of talent and dedication within the Philippine weightlifting community.
