Joshua Ramos Sets Sights on Podium Finish at Ironman 70.3 Davao

Joshua Ramos is leveraging his biking prowess as he makes a significant leap from the 5150 distance to tackle the demanding Ironman 70.3 race in Davao. Scheduled for March 22 in Davao City, this event marks a pivotal moment in the 24-year-old Baguio native's career, following his recent victory at 5150 Guimaras.

Transitioning to a Tougher Challenge

Ramos, a member of the national elite team, views his Guimaras triumph as an ideal preparation for the upcoming half-Ironman format. "5150 Guimaras was just a fitness check since I’m doing the Ironman 70.3 Davao," he stated, having outperformed top Filipino contenders Matthew Hermosa and Kim Remolino. The shift involves a substantial increase in distance: from a 1.5km swim, 40km bike, and 10km run to a grueling 1.9km swim, 90km bike, and 21.1km run.

Strategic Adjustments and Future Plans

Despite back-to-back endurance races, Ramos remains undeterred and is already planning more competitions post-Davao. "From Davao, most likely I’d want to do another IM 70.3 and maybe a lot more 5150s," he revealed. However, the Davao race presents a sterner test with a highly competitive field and a modified bike course designed to challenge pacing, technical execution, and race strategy under demanding conditions.

Race Dynamics and Environmental Factors

The revamped route will require athletes to balance speed and endurance, while expected heat and humidity during race week could add further complications. In the women's Elite Category, Bea Quiambao, a multi-winner in 5150 races who skipped Guimaras, leads the field in this event organized by Sunrise Events, Inc.

Boosting Philippine Sports Tourism

The Ironman 70.3 Davao is part of the National Sports Tourism–Inter-Agency Council's initiative to position the Philippines as a premier global destination for endurance sports. Led by the Philippine Sports Commission with support from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza), this program highlights how world-class races in spectacular natural settings can enhance the country's sporting reputation and tourism appeal.

Event Significance and Participation

This race marks Davao's fifth hosting of the premier endurance event after a break last year, drawing a strong international field across various age categories and the Open championship division. Organizers and the host city are collaborating closely to ensure smooth conduct and overall success, promising fierce battles in power, speed, stamina, and strategy.
