The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is taking a significant step to support Gilas Pilipinas by adopting rules from the world basketball governing body FIBA, effective at the start of the upcoming Governors' Cup. The decision was made during a recent meeting of league officials and coaches.
Key Rule Changes
Commissioner Willie Marcial announced the changes, stating, "We will change the calls, situational and fouls next conference. Much closer to FIBA calls. That's how supportive the PBA is of Gilas Pilipinas." The most notable change is the elimination of jumpballs, which will be replaced by possession arrows.
However, not all rules will be altered. The PBA will retain its traditional 12-minute quarters, six personal fouls per player, current timeout limits, and the four-point shot. PBA board vice-chairman and Barangay Ginebra governor Alfrancis Chua clarified, "Hindi naman lahat babaguhin" (Not everything will be changed).
Rationale Behind the Changes
The adjustments are designed to help Gilas Pilipinas players become accustomed to international play. Chua explained, "Yung adjustment kasi talagang malayo. Every time we play internationally, iba yung fouls dito (PBA), iba yung fouls doon (FIBA). We're just adjusting middle of the game na." He added, "Minsan sobrang physical sila, minsan naman mahipan mo lang foul na. So we need to adapt. We're just thinking to at least help the players who are playing for Gilas."
