Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala's campaign at the Italian Open in Rome has officially come to a close after a tough loss in the doubles competition.
Eala, partnering with American Hailey Baptiste, fell to the formidable duo of Taylor Townsend (USA) and Kateřina Siniaková (Czech Republic) in the first round of the women's doubles event. The match, held on Tuesday evening, May 12, 2026 (Philippine time), ended with a decisive score of 6-2, 6-1.
The opening set was highly competitive, with both teams exchanging powerful shots before Townsend and Siniaková managed to secure a 1-0 lead. However, after that initial battle, the experienced pair dominated the proceedings, showcasing their superior clay-court expertise and overwhelming Eala and Baptiste with consistent play and tactical precision.
Earlier in the tournament, Eala had also competed in the singles draw, where she recorded two impressive victories before being stopped by Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina in the Round of 32. The final score of that match was 6-4, 6-3 in favor of Rybakina.
Despite the early exit in doubles, Eala's performance in Rome highlighted her growing prowess on clay and her ability to compete against top-tier opponents.
