Alex Eala has nothing to be ashamed of after her loss to Elena Rybakina at the Italian Open. In fact, the 20-year-old Filipino tennis sensation can walk proudly anywhere, having delivered a brilliant performance despite the defeat.
The match took place on Sunday night, May 10, 2026, Philippine time, in the Round of 32 of the Italian Open in Rome. Eala put up a courageous fight but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-3 to the world number two from Kazakhstan.
However, the loss looked more like a win to many observers. Eala kept her composure throughout the one-and-a-half-hour contest and had Rybakina on the ropes on several occasions. A sizable crowd in ancient Rome witnessed the match, with one Filipino spectator shouting, "Laban Eala Laban!" (Fight Eala Fight!) during changeovers.
The 5-foot-9 Eala fought with heart and mind, engaging the 6-foot-0 Rybakina in a ferocious skirmish. But the weight of Rybakina's world number two ranking proved too heavy for the 44th-ranked Eala, who eventually had to let go.
Still, Eala's demeanor remained that of a determined warrior out to prove she has what it takes to become a champion someday. She showed it in the first set, rallying from a 1-3 deficit to stay close. She even saved a match point to make it 4-5 while holding serve. However, Rybakina's sheer power and experience, having turned pro in 2014, sealed the first set with a smashing ace.
Eala did not fold easily. She took a 2-1 lead in the second set with a break in the second game. Stung, Rybakina unleashed her full might to win three straight games for a 4-2 lead, eventually closing out the set 6-3 to advance to the Round of 16 for the fourth time in five attempts.
Despite the loss, Eala held her head high. Movie idol Johnny Revilla praised her for putting up a "more than decent" fight. Earlier in the tournament, Eala had defeated Poland's Magdalena Frech and China's Xinyu Wang to set up the meeting with Rybakina.
A Project in Progress
Alex Eala is a project in progress, and there is no rush. Her performance against a top-ranked opponent showed immense promise and resilience. The young Filipino star continues to gain valuable experience on the WTA Tour, and her future looks bright.
