Record 32 Teams Set for 89th Araw ng Dabaw Inter-School Volleyball Tournament

Tournament organizer and coach John Fort Mongao has announced a historic 32-team field for the 89th Araw ng Dabaw Inter-School Volleyball Tournament, marking one of the largest editions in the event's long history. The announcement was made during the Davao Sportswriters Association Forum at SM City Davao Annex on March 5, 2026, signaling a major expansion for this beloved local sports tradition.

New Elementary Division to Kick Off Competitive Play

Secondary Division matches are scheduled to begin on March 14 at the University of Mindanao (UM) Matina gym, following the elementary division games. Mongao highlighted that this year's tournament introduces a brand-new Elementary Division, designed to deliver more competitive and high-quality matches from the ground up. "Our focus is to ensure a quality game for everyone. It's about the pride of the school, not the prize," Mongao emphasized during the forum, underscoring the educational and community values at the heart of the event.

Community Support Vital for Volleyball Growth

Mongao passionately encouraged the Dabawenyos community to attend the games and support the city's burgeoning volleyball scene. "We are inviting everyone to watch and support our athletes. Your support helps us continue to grow and improve volleyball events in our city," he added, pointing to the crucial role of local fans in fostering athletic development and school spirit.

The record-breaking participation of 32 teams not only showcases the growing popularity of volleyball in Davao but also sets the stage for an exciting and diverse competition. This expansion reflects a concerted effort to nurture young talent and promote sportsmanship across all age groups, making the 89th edition a landmark moment for inter-school athletics in the region.
